The Saint Nicholas Project
 St. Nicholas Church of Engalnd
 Old Marston, Oxford, United Kingdom

Sherry created 7 paintings inspired by the life of St. Nicholas for her local church as part of Oxford Art Weeks.
FAITH Faith is complete trust or confidence and St. Nicholas placed his faith in God. He never wanted credit for himself but always redirected the attention he received to God. This anchor firmly caught in a cloud represents his faith pointing others to God and giving an assurance that it will indeed hold. #Faith #anchor #cloud
STORM TOSSED NIGHT Sailors lost at sea were unable to find port due to the foggy night. In desperation they called out to St. Nicholas. They reported that a figure appeared to them and directed them to the port around the dangerous reef. They knew it was St. Nicholas who came to their rescue when they went to the church in town and saw the image of the saint in the church. #St.Nicholas #boat #SherryBarrett
STORM TOSSED LIFE St. Nicholas' city, Myra, was experiencing a famine. When a ship stopped in Myra on its way to the capital, St. Nicholas insisted that the captain give a portion of the grain it was carrying for those starving. Though afraid to arrive at his final destination with missing grain, the captain relented. When the ship reached the capital, however, the stores of grain were full somehow. #St.Nicholas #PatronSaintofSailors #boat #SherryBarrett
STORM TOSSED DAY Many stories of St. Nicholas concern the sea. Not surprisingly, St. Nicholas is the patron saint of sailors. The Christian life isn't a promise of smooth sailing; but, the work of Jesus on the cross, like this sail, will stay up and see you safely through the rough waters. #St.Nicholas #boat #stormtossedboat
END INJUSTICE St. Nicholas returned from a voyage and was informed, as he stepped off the ship, that 3 young men from his town had been falsely accused by the corrupt governor and were to be beheaded immediately. The legend says the saint rushed to the scene and grabbed the blade of the sword to stop the execution just in time. Do we rush into harms way to defend the innocent? #St.Nicholas #EndInjustice
SEPARATION This painting was inspired by St. Nicholas' imprisonment under the persecution of Christians by Roman Emperor Diocletian. It is a reminder to pray for those imprisoned and of our own imprisonment: separation from God due to our sins and our need for Jesus' intercession. #St.Nicholas #Prisoner #SeparatedbySin
DON'T WORRY St. Nicholas is best known for tossing bags of coins through the window of a house where 3 daughters would have been sold into slavery if their father couldn't provide dowries for them to wed. Do you keep the window of your heart open or do you keep your window tight shut and try to fix problems yourself? Do you imitate St. Nicholas by giving gifts without care for recognition or thanks? #Don'tWorry #Matthew6:25 #St.Nicholas #Dowry
